Muslim weddings are known to have classic ceremonies with pomp and splendor. They are very orthodox in nature, but of late many weddings seem to have gone global. In a wedding the various traditions reflect on the diversity of the Muslim world.

Muslims from various countries and cultures come together in a union for life. A lot of people may confuse the weddings of such people and call every wedding of this kind an Islamic wedding. However this is not true.

For a lot of Muslims, it is the Islamic ceremony that counts and not an official registration of the marriage. Wedding traditions will vary from culture to culture. The most imporatnt part of such wedding is the contract. Gender seperations are very strict in such ceremonies and sometimes, someone else may be standing in the groom’s place.

The contract means both parties will decide how much the bride will receive from the groom in the form of gifts. Some amount of money may be given before the marriage, and then money may be poured in during the marriage too.

A lot of celebrations and festivities take place after the marriage and is similar to western wedding receptions. The bride will be involved in a grand festivity where her friends and relatives dress her up well. They also apply henna to her hands.

The bridegroom will have a separate gathering with the male relatives. Another part of the wedding in the Muslim culture is that the groom and bride will appear together before they get together for the first time at night.

Celibacy is condemned by the teachings of Muhammed, so every Muslim has marriage enjoined upon them. Such a traditional wedding calls for endless list of guests and lots of delicious food. It is probably one of the most colourful weddings of the world culture.

The nikaah is the term used for the contract that happens during the wedding. This contract will not be reduced to writing but a mutual and respectful agreement between both parties. Both families will schedule a date and the couple will go the mosque with the bride’s father and with two witnesses to register the marriage.

On an appointed day, the groom willgo the bride’s house and seek permission for the marriage. As per the wedding custom in the Muslim religion, the bride may ask for anything, money or property. The groom will then give her whatever he is capable of giving. This is to make sure that in the fututre the bride does not struggle if she wants a seperation from her husband.

Other than the nikaah, all other ceremonies will be conducted twice by both sides. Only after that the couple may consummate their marriage. A very popular dish at these beautiful weddings is the biryani. The Muslim culture is known to prepare the greatest tasting biryani across the world. It is a spicy rice dish with many spices that can be cooked with meat or vegetables, and is usually reddish yellow in colour.
